Wireless M-Bus / M-Bus: the standard for heat, water and gas meters in buildings; wireless M-Bus is read by a walk-by handheld or a gateway such as the Engelmann ComStar
RS485 / Modbus: a wired serial link to a data logger, BMS or SCADA, common on DIN-rail and panel meters
STS: the Standard Transfer Specification for prepaid tokens, which lets any STS meter accept tokens sold by any STS vendor

How does STS prepaid metering work?

A prepaid sub-meter sits after the utility or landlord supply and controls a single unit or tenant. The tenant buys a token for their meter number, enters it, and the meter releases that amount of electricity, water or gas. Because the meters follow the STS (Standard Transfer Specification) standard, tokens can be sold by any STS-compliant vending system, including UtilityPal Self-Vend.

How do I order?

For export orders we recommend requesting a quote first so that shipping, documentation and any regional variants (voltage, frequency band, approvals) are confirmed before payment.

What warranty do your products carry?

All products carry the manufacturer's warranty against defects as stated on the product datasheet. Warranty claims are handled by UtilityPal: email support@utilitypal.co.za with your invoice number, meter serial number and a description of the fault, and we will arrange assessment, repair or replacement.

What currency and taxes apply?

Prices are shown in the store currency and are quoted for export. Orders shipped outside South Africa are invoiced as exports; import duties, VAT or GST in the destination country are for the account of the buyer and are collected by the carrier or customs authority on arrival. If you need a pro-forma invoice for import purposes, ask when you order.

Which meter do I need for a three-phase supply or a large main?

For up to 100 A per phase a direct-connected three-phase DIN-rail meter is usually enough. Above that you need a CT-operated meter with current transformers sized to the supply (for example 200/5 A). Tell us the breaker size, supply voltage and frequency and how you want to read the meter, and we will specify the meter and CTs together.

Can UtilityPal meters be used in my country?

Yes. Our STS prepaid meters are used across Africa and further afield, and tokens are issued online through UtilityPal Self-Vend so tenants can buy credit from anywhere. Tell us the country when you order so we can confirm voltage, frequency, communication band and any local approvals.

Question 10

Can I return a product?

Accepted Answer

Unused products in their original, undamaged packaging can be returned for a refund or credit; please contact us first so we can issue a return reference. Products that have been installed, energised or programmed, and items imported to order, can only be returned if they are faulty. International return shipping for non-faulty goods is for the customer's account.

How long will my order take?

Accepted Answer

Each product page shows its lead time under the description:
1 - 3 Days: stocked in South Africa and ready to dispatch
8 - 10 Days: imported to order from the manufacturer (for example Engelmann, Ivy Metering and some Kamstrup lines)
Longer lead times, where they apply, are stated on the product page or confirmed on your quote
Lead times are working days from payment and exclude international transit, which we confirm on your quote (typically 3 to 10 working days by courier depending on destination).

Question 12

My meter shows an error or is not accepting tokens. What do I do?

Accepted Answer

First check that the meter number on the token matches the meter, and that the meter has power. If the token is still rejected, or the display shows an error or tamper message, email support@utilitypal.co.za with the meter number and a photo of the display. Most vending problems are resolved remotely the same day.

Question 13

How do tenants buy tokens outside South Africa?

Accepted Answer

Through UtilityPal Self-Vend: the tenant enters the meter number, chooses an amount and pays online, and the token is issued immediately. Property owners receive their vending revenue and a monthly statement by EFT or international transfer as agreed. Ask us to set up Self-Vend for your property when you order the meters.

Which brands do you carry?

We stock and support established metering brands including Kamstrup, Engelmann, Accuenergy, Ivy Metering, Honeywell Elster and Siemens, alongside our own UtilityPal STS prepaid range and a selection of solar, battery and backup brands. Every product page carries the manufacturer datasheet so you can check specifications and approvals before you buy.

What is a heat or cooling (BTU) meter and when do I need one?

A heat meter measures thermal energy delivered by a heating or chilled-water circuit by combining flow measurement with a pair of temperature sensors. You need one wherever heating or cooling is shared and must be recovered fairly, such as central HVAC in offices, hotels and apartment blocks. Our Engelmann range covers compact ultrasonic meters up to DN50 and calculator-plus-flow-sensor combinations up to DN300.

How is shipping charged?

International shipping is quoted per order based on destination, weight and dimensions, and we can ship by courier (DHL, FedEx, UPS or Aramex) or by air or sea freight for larger consignments. We are happy to ship on your own courier account or to your freight forwarder in South Africa.

Do you offer installation and commissioning support?

For international orders we provide remote commissioning support to your electrician, plumber or integrator: wiring diagrams, configuration files, gateway setup and platform onboarding. On-site commissioning can be quoted for larger projects.

Where do you ship to?

Accepted Answer

We ship worldwide from South Africa, with most of our international customers in Southern and East Africa, the Indian Ocean islands and the Middle East. Tell us your country when you enquire and we will confirm shipping options, transit time and any local approvals or frequency bands (for example LoRaWAN EU868 versus other regional plans) that apply to your order.

What is the difference between a prepaid and a smart meter?

Accepted Answer

A prepaid meter requires credit to be loaded before it releases supply and is ideal for tenant cost recovery. A smart meter is read remotely and can be postpaid, prepaid or both, and gives you interval data, alarms and remote disconnect. Many modern meters, such as the Ivy Metering LoRaWAN range and Kamstrup OMNIPOWER, do both.

Are your meters certified?

Our prepaid electricity meters are STS certified, and our billing-grade energy, water and heat meters carry MID and IEC class approvals as stated on each product page and datasheet. If your utility or regulator requires a specific approval, ask before ordering and we will confirm in writing.

Can you help me choose the right product?

Yes, and we would rather you ask than buy the wrong part. Email info@utilitypal.co.za with what you are metering, the supply size or pipe diameter, how many points, your country and how you want to read or bill them. We will come back with a recommendation and part numbers.

Yes. Any STS-compliant prepaid meter for electricity, water or gas can be migrated to UtilityPal vending with a key change. Email support@utilitypal.co.za with your meter numbers and current vendor and we will take you through the process.

Can I order for a project or in bulk?

Accepted Answer

Yes. For developments, estates, utilities and repeat orders we offer project pricing, staged deliveries and part-number schedules. Send your bill of quantities or meter schedule to info@utilitypal.co.za and we will return a quote, usually within one working day.

Do you provide remote reading and reporting?

Accepted Answer

Yes. For LoRaWAN, wireless M-Bus, RS485 and cellular meters we configure the gateway, bring the meters onto the platform and set up daily readings, leak or tamper alarms and monthly reports. This is quoted per site depending on the number of meters and the communication used.

Which part number am I ordering when a product has a dropdown?

Accepted Answer

Many of our products group a model range into one listing with a dropdown for size, communication option or version. The exact manufacturer part number for each option is listed under Ordering Options in the description and is recorded on your order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity about what has been supplied.

Do you supply solar and backup power?
